It's All Coming Back to Me Now by
Another hard-hitting work from Richard Mitchell, Less than Words Can Say takes the reader through the nature of language. That sounds pretty boring. It isn't.
Mitchell explains how the language we use alters the way we think. Why do bueracrats so despise those they "serve?" Look at the language said bueracrats use. Etc.
In creating the mythical tribe the Jiukiukwe, Mitchell takes the reader on a fascinating look at the purpose of language. A gem from this chapter is when the author breaks one of this reader's previously-held notions. In responding to potential criticism of his views of correct speech and coherent thought, Mitchell writes, "Such objections come from the erroneous idea that the point of language is merely to communicate, 'to act your ideas across,' whatever that means." Language is for so much more.
A must read.
